Another long email newsletter with lots to report…
At the end of last month two of my Fitzrovia News colleagues and I gave a talk to Camden History Society about the past 50 years of Fitzrovia News and its predecessor, Tower. CHS had invited us to do the talk in response to our recent publication: Fitzrovia News: Celebrating 50 Years. You can watch the talk from the CHS website.
A quick update on Crabtree Fields. There are now engagement events scheduled. See this story for background.
It’s very distressing when pets go missing. On Saturday afternoon a black and white border collie greyhound mix dog went astray from an address in Cleveland Street. However, today we received news that Isla the female dog has been found safe and well.
Last week part of Tottenham Court Road was closed off for most of the day after a man died during a police chase.
Around 140 businesses in Fitzrovia West will have the opportunity to vote this month on whether to create a business improvement district (BID) in partnership with Westminster Council. The BID promises cleaner streets — just like those on the Camden side of the neighbourhood which “has enjoyed the additional services provided by The Fitzrovia Partnership BID” for the past 11 years.
I very much enjoyed watching The People’s Piazza: A History of Covent Garden, which was aired again on BBC2 in September. Presented by historian David Olusoga, it covers 400 years of history and has some interesting interviews with people living and working in the area, including a very young architect and campaigner Jim Monahan. You can view it on iPlayer.
Covid-19 remains a major threat. Experts are urging people to start wearing face coverings in indoor public areas again — and a majority of people in one survey agree. Please follow NHS advice to avoid catching and spreading the virus.
